The Californian manufacturer’s success in the sale of 100% electric luxury vehicles has unexpected repercussions, while the British manufacturer Jaguar now wants to abandon the production of two sports car projects to replace them with an electric sedan and sport utility vehicle.
The two abandoned projects include the replacement of the XK, whose death was announced last year. It was initially stated that it is the platform of the F-type that would serve as a basis for the new car, but it seems that the project is delayed or completely canceled.
Another project postponed or canceled due to Jaguar’s electric turn, the marketing of the CX-75 will finally never be a reality. The super car covers, created in 2010 to mark the 75th anniversary of the brand, was originally a hybrid engine, but we had changed our minds on the road to install a gasoline engine.
Jaguar’s new plans would include a four-door sedan known as the X590, and offer the silhouette of a four-door coupe. A utility is also on the menu, to counter the Tesla model X and the Audi Q6 e-tron scheduled for 2018.
Jaguar’s plans are ambitious. The brand, which sold 83,986 vehicles across its entire lineup in 2015, is anticipating the sale of $ 30,000 sedans and 50,000 electric sport utility vehicles once the projects are completed.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5, World Car of the Year
At the opening of the second world media day at the New York International Auto Show, the World Car of the Year Awards were announced, after having announced the finalists at the recent Salon of Geneva.
Mazda had a resounding crop, with its 2016 Mazda MX-5 convertible winning the title of World Car of the Year, ahead of the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The same MX-5 has also earned the title of best design of the year, taking precedence over another Mazda, the utility Mazda CX-3, and the Jaguar XE.
In other categories, the title of the 2016 World Performance Car was awarded to the all-new Audi R8, sporting the Honda Civic Type-R and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupé. In the Green Car of the Year category, the title was awarded to Toyota for its 2016 Toyota Mirai Hydrogen, overtaking the Toyota Prius and the Chevrolet Volt.
Finally, in the category of Luxury Cars of the Year, the BMW 7 Series was ahead of the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 to win the honors. The World Car of the Year Award has been awarded since 2004 by a jury of 77 journalists from around the world, including two Canadian representatives.
Detroit Auto Show: after the E-Tron, here is the Audi Q6 H-Tron
Last September in Frankfurt, Audi unveiled (finally say some) its fully electric SUV, the Q6 E-Tron. Designed to compete eventually with the Tesla Model X, the Q6 E-Tron promises a range of 500 kilometers with a battery of 95 kWh powering an electric motor capable of developing 435 horses. Today in Detroit , it is hydrogen that is in the spotlight for Audi while the German manufacturer has unveiled the Q6 H-Tron . You guessed it, the “H” is for hydrogen , the energy source used by the battery to provide even greater autonomy than that offered by the E-Tron.
According to Audi, it will be possible to travel up to 373 miles driving its hydrogen SUV, about 600 kilometers. However, the power will be lower, amounting to 208 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.
The reduced power is partly explained by the fact that H-Tron is propelled by two electric motors while the E-Tron has three.
A four-wheel steering system already seen in the new Q7 is also on the menu, as are all the manufacturer’s active safety systems. The loading space is 500 liters.
The M-Tron is the newest model hydrogen powered to point the tip of the grille, Toyota has introduced its Mirai last year and Hyundai have put on sale (limited quantity) Tucson FCEV in 2015 in Colombia -British.
Mercedes-Benz would also be ready to kick off the party with a GLC with hydrogen while Honda has long since kicked off the ball with several concepts unveiled over the years. That said, do not expect to see the Q6 H-Tron on the roads before 2020.
Audi embarks on hydrogen in Detroit
Audi has great aspirations in 2016 by presenting a crossover that will have a motorization running on hydrogen.
To better forget the troubles of the end of 2015 for the Volkswagen group, this news should rally the lovers of environmentally friendly vehicles with the German brand.
Indeed, an innovative model should be presented to journalists at the next Detroit Auto Show, at the beginning of next January, the Audi Q6 H-Tron. The builder points out that the SUV’s range would be approximately 500 km.
It will be a few years before seeing such a vehicle run on public roads, but alternative energies are gaining more and more place on the market and in the aspirations of Audi. We also saw at the last Frankfurt Motor Show an all-electric SUV that should be marketed.
